Anyone do custom Joomla templates? (Mike Brogan) How custom do you mean? As in built from scratch? Or just "customized"? If the later, you can do that yourself. I had one built from scratch before for my first Joomla site, thinking that was what I needed to do. It was unusable and it was money down the drain. It takes a lot of forethought and testing to do that, so I stick with ready-made now because they have already been tested. I then customize those so they don't look like at all like they did when I purchased them, and sometimes go so far as to customize the layout, although that is rarely necessary. Yes we do Joomla. www.franklee.com www.planetherbs.com (I'm always afraid to send people to sites that I did that are now managed by the client, so there are some things happening there, I'm not too happy about. I need to see if I can come back in and give them a little more training or do a little clean up work. However, their business has improved so much because of the community building that is going on, maybe there is no need. :-) That site has a lot going on: store, e-learning center, 2 forums, research articles, business directory, blogs, etc. Both of those use the Chromatophore template here: http:// demo.rockettheme.com/ I did customize the layout in the code a little on each one. As you can see, they don't look anything like the template. You can watch this one begin to take shape: http://97.74.140.117/ Here you see it in ALMOST purchased, template form. I will be customizing it over the next couple of days. This one is so nice and clean and pretty that I will be keeping a lot of the template elements and CSS though, so don't expect a lot of change happening here. Let me know how we can help. What > commands would you expect to find, or not find? I use SSH with 1and1.com and a few others. I do very little from the command line. Mostly I just use Putty to see what's there. However, I do LOTS of secure file transfers as FTP is a bad idea due to security issues. SFTP and SCP are the protocols of choice, using WinSCP: I've had no sniffed password problems since I've shoved WinSCP down my customers throats and disabled FTP wherever I find it (except on Cruzio). The only time I get into trouble is when the HTML or photo album editor has a built in FTP client (such as JAlbum). For these, I'm still spewing unencrypted passwords. If possible, I run these inside a VPN tunnel (except on Cruzio). You can get a fair idea of what's offered for SSH on 1and1.com at: They offer SSH with literally every package. The only real complications (so far) is that only one user per account can login via SSH at a time. I have a dozen users with associated ftp accounts all sharing my account (yeah, I'm cheap). I've seen occasional collisions. I'm not sure what you mean by "access to certain utilities". As far as I can tell, everything works from Putty that could reasonably be expected to function. I won't try to run Xterm inside a Putty SSH session but all the standard command line stuff in /bin, /usr/bin /usr/local/bin and such are there. I don't have any dedicated servers, but I would expect the admin stuff to also be available.
